It's quite something when a tiny little berry is declared a 'superfood' just like that. There it is, on a neat list along with broccoli, tomatoes, garlic, fatty fish and olive oil: the blueberry. This place is more than deserved, as it happens. There are quite a few substances in that purple-blue berry that will make your body happy.
The blueberry was not so much discovered as a superfood, but actually rediscovered. Can you imagine there once was a time when the fruit was sort of forgotten? Until suddenly we realised how much goodness there is under the blue skin. (The substance that gives the blueberry such a deep blue colour is called anthocyanin, by the way.) The blueberry is a supplier of vitamin K, a vitamin that you will not find in every type of fruit.
This vitamin is also important for the processes in your body. Vitamin K helps with regular blood clotting. It is also a building block that maintains strong bones.
To be honest, there's no need to faff around if you just want to enjoy a bowl of blueberries. Just rinse them under the tap, and attack. What many people don't know, is that the EAT ME blueberry also has culinary talents. You can give a cheesecake, for example, a very surprising touch by combining blueberries with raspberries as a topping. Your breakfast will be healthier with a bowl full of varied exotic fruit, including blueberries. And if you promised the little ones pancakes today, why not serve them with blueberries and strawberries as a flavourful topping!
Blueberries are not just for summer and autumn. While it is true that for a large part of the year they are grown nearby in Western European countries, growers in South America will come to the rescue for the other months of the year. In this way, you can enjoy this fruit twelve months a year.
If you are a fan of blueberries – and let's be honest, who isn't – you can find some inspiration on this recipe page. And on the EAT ME product page, you can read more about the Tom Thumb of the superfoods!
